The name "MelaHomie" is a play on words—Mela for melanoma, and Homie for friend. This is a place where we hope to be a supportive resource for those navigating the world of melanoma, whether you're newly diagnosed or just looking to learn more.
Hi, I’m Brianna Raridon, and here’s a bit about my experience with melanoma. I was first diagnosed with melanoma at 20 years old, and have since had a total of 16 melanomas, ranging from insitu/stage 0 to stage 1b.
I was originally encouraged to see a dermatologist by my sister, who had been diagnosed with melanoma herself, as I had a spot that wouldn’t stop itching. (I thought it was a bug bite!) We encouraged our middle sister to get a skin check too, along with my dad, and unfortunately, they both were diagnosed with melanoma as well. Over 25 melanoma diagnoses between the 4 of us. A true family affair 🤨
For years, we didn’t share our stories, as it’s emotional, and the scars—both physical and emotional—were difficult for us. But we’ve learned that sharing our experiences can help others. My sisters and I have always felt that if sharing our story can help one person, it would be worth it. But the more we share, the more we hear from others who’ve been inspired to get checked or to encourage a loved one to do the same. While it’s not easy to expose our scars, literally and figuratively, we’ve learned that the more we share, the more we help others.
We understand that getting a melanoma diagnosis can be overwhelming, and not everyone has a sister—or anyone—who truly understands and can walk through it with them. We’re fortunate to have each other to lean on as we research, learn, and share what we discover. But we know that not everyone has this kind of support. And even if you do have a sister, she may not fully understand your experience. That's why we created The Melahomie—a place to find helpful information, motivation, and guidance as you take the first steps in your melanoma journey.
This is a place for anyone interested in protecting your skin and health- whether you have melanoma or not! We’re here to offer preventative advice, motivation to begin caring for your skin, and encouragement to take those first steps in checking your body and getting screened. We hope that one thing we share will help you too.
Whether you are just curious about our journey or looking to learn more about prevention, we hope the resources here inspire you to take action and start your own path to skin health.
And as you go forward, you too can be a melahomie for someone else by sharing what you’ve learned.
Together, we hope to help each other so no one has to experience this alone.
